The Health Information Trust Alliance (HITRUST)
HITRUST stands for the Health Information Trust Alliance. This framework helps organizations from all sectors, especially healthcare, effectively manage data, information risk, and compliance.
The Health Information Trust Alliance (HITRUST) created the Common Security Framework (CSF) that encompasses nationally and internationally accepted standards, frameworks, and regulations such as ISO, GDPR, NIST, HIPAA, and PCI to provide a set of best practices, baseline security, and privacy controls.
While HITRUST remains the highest standard for healthcare organizations, since its 2019 update, the Framework shifted to a non-industry-specific language. This allows other industries to adopt HITRUST to establish an all-around information security control environment.

While many believe that HIPAA and HITRUST are similar, this is not true. HIPAA is a law to protect Personal Health Information (PHI); therefore, healthcare organizations must comply with it. HITRUST is an organization that established and continuously updates the Common Security Framework (CSF).
